Opuntia macrorhiza (Plains Prickly Pear)

 

BLOOM PERIOD: March - May

HABITAT: A variety of habitats rangeing from open grasslands to post oak savannahs. Usually found in sandy soils but there is one subspecies that can be found in the blackland prairies of central Texas.

SUBSPECIES: Several are recognized, but can be difficult to distinguish (especially by me). O. macrorhiza macrorhiza, O. macrorhiza fusco-atra, O. macrorhiza grandiflora, O. macrorhiza greeni, O. macrorhiza stenochila.
